It’s fast.         The right fit: Sits smoothly against the hand with no bunching at the fingers, no restriction at the palm or wrist, and enough cuff length to tuck under a sleeve. It should feel like a second skin: present but not intrusive.

How to Measure Your Hand for Medical Gloves

Medical exam glove sizing is based primarily on hand circumference — the measurement around the widest part of the palm, excluding the thumb. Length is a secondary factor but matters for comfort and cuff coverage.

Step 1: Measure Hand Circumference

Use a flexible measuring tape (or a strip of paper measured against a ruler). Wrap it around your dominant hand at the widest point — typically just below the knuckles, fingers together, thumb excluded. Note the measurement in inches.

Step 2: Measure Hand Length

Measure from the tip of your middle finger to the base of your palm (where the wrist begins). This helps confirm your size when you fall near a boundary between two sizes, and ensures adequate cuff coverage.

Sizing tip: When between sizes, go smaller for nitrile (it stretches to conform) and larger for vinyl (which doesn’t). For latex, most clinicians prefer the snugger fit for tactile precision.

Brand-Specific Notes: Not All Sizes Are Created Equal

Even within the same material, sizing can vary between manufacturers — and even between colors within the same brand. A few things worth knowing before you order:

        2nd Skin Black XL runs larger than standard TQM sizing. Clinicians who normally wear XL may find Large or 2nd Skin Violet in XL gives a better fit. TQM notes this directly on the product page.

        Thicker gloves fit tighter. A 6-mil heavy-duty glove in Medium will feel snugger than a 3-mil exam glove in the same stated size. When switching to a thicker glove, consider sizing up.

        Sterile gloves use a different sizing convention. Sterile surgical gloves are sized numerically (6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, etc.) based on palm width in centimeters. A size 7 sterile glove roughly corresponds to a Medium in standard exam sizing.

        Polychloroprene gloves tend to run slightly smaller than comparable nitrile. If switching from nitrile to poly, test a half-size up. Note that sterile gloves are available in numerical size, while non-sterile polychloroprene gloves are available in small, medium and large.

        Hand fatigue and cramping from gripping harder to compensate for slack in an oversized glove, or restricted circulation in an undersized one
